Complete SEO Audit Checklist 2026

A systematic checklist to find and fix every SEO issue on your website. Work through each section to ensure nothing is missed.

1. Crawlability checks

Before search engines can rank your pages, they need to find and crawl them. These checks ensure nothing blocks access.

  • Verify robots.txt is accessible and not blocking important paths
  • Check for accidental Disallow: / directives
  • Submit an XML sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Ensure sitemap URLs return 200 status codes
  • Keep crawl depth under 4 clicks from the homepage

2. Indexability checks

Crawlable does not mean indexable. Confirm that the pages you want ranked can actually appear in search results.

  • Search site:yourdomain.com to see indexed page count
  • Check for unintended noindex meta tags or HTTP headers
  • Ensure canonical tags point to the correct preferred URL
  • Resolve duplicate content issues (www vs non-www, HTTP vs HTTPS)
  • Fix redirect chains longer than 2 hops

3. On-page SEO

On-page elements directly influence how search engines understand your content and how users decide to click.

  • Every page has a unique <title> tag (50-60 characters)
  • Meta descriptions are compelling and under 160 characters
  • Each page has exactly one <h1> tag
  • Heading hierarchy is logical (h1 > h2 > h3, no skipping)
  • Images have descriptive alt attributes
  • URLs are clean, descriptive, and use hyphens

4. Content quality

  • Content matches search intent for target keywords
  • Thin pages (<300 words) are expanded or consolidated
  • No keyword stuffing — write naturally
  • Content is fresh and regularly updated
  • E-E-A-T signals: author bios, citations, expertise indicators

5. Technical infrastructure

  • HTTPS enabled on all pages with valid SSL certificate
  • HTTP to HTTPS redirects in place (301, not 302)
  • No mixed content warnings
  • Custom 404 page with navigation
  • Server response time under 200ms (TTFB)
  • Proper HTTP status codes (no soft 404s)

6. Internal linking

  • Important pages have links from the homepage or main navigation
  • No orphan pages (pages with zero internal links pointing to them)
  • Anchor text is descriptive, not "click here"
  • No broken internal links (404s)
  • Breadcrumb navigation implemented

7. Mobile friendliness

  • Viewport meta tag is present and correctly configured
  • Text is readable without zooming (minimum 16px body text)
  • Tap targets are at least 48x48px with adequate spacing
  • No horizontal scrolling on mobile devices
  • Content is not hidden behind interstitials

8. Performance

  • LCP under 2.5 seconds
  • INP under 200 milliseconds
  • CLS under 0.1
  • Images are optimized (WebP/AVIF, lazy loaded, properly sized)
  • CSS and JS are minified and compressed

9. Structured data

Structured data earns rich results in search. See the structured data guide for implementation details.

  • JSON-LD implemented (preferred over Microdata)
  • Validated in Google Rich Results Test
  • Appropriate schema types: Article, Product, FAQ, BreadcrumbList, Organization

10. Off-page signals

  • Google Business Profile is claimed and complete (for local SEO)
  • Backlink profile is healthy — no spammy or toxic links
  • Social media profiles link back to your website
  • Brand mentions are consistent across the web
